JHILL DESIGN JENNIFER HILL

“I’ve always been a doodler and a day dreamer. Drawing in the margins of my notebooks…” Plenty of doodling was done while attending the Massachusetts College of Art, where Jennifer graduated from with a BFA in design in 2001.

From there Jennifer went on to work for the acclaimed beauty company, Fresh. She developed her sense of color and pattern while perfecting the aesthetics of “clean” design. She was able to expand on her doodling and develop patterns for the company’s packaging and collateral. “It really was the perfect entry-level job for me. I was allowed to draw AND I got to test beauty products.”

From there Jennifer broke out on her own to start JHill Design and develop her collection of drawings “Places I Have Never Been.”

“I’ve always loved to travel, so when I read or hear about places around the world I start day-dreaming about what it is like there… and then I start drawing. The patterns are influenced by the natural setting of the place, by the culture, and by the events I imagine being part of.” For each piece Jennifer includes tidbits of information about the place: The city/area and country name, the language, how many miles one would travel from the east coast (specifically Boston) to get there, and a few words about the influence of the place on the pattern.

“This series is about the expectations we all have of discovering a new place. My hope is to eventually include pieces that chronicle not only where I hope to go, but where I have been.”
